Zero carbon Campus - We are proud to say that our campus has been certified with the zero carbon certificate. We thus guarantee to provide our students with fresh and clean air which is a rare commodity in today’s times. We have actively been a part of Green Schools Initiative where we use a four pillar framework that integrates efforts to reduce school’s ecological footprint, makes schools environment healthier and get the whole community thinking about solutions to the problems we face. The pillars cover everything from new construction to maintainance, food service to gardens and office supplies to classroom curricula, thus looking the current issues globally.
Use of Solar energy
We believe in practicing what we teach. In the midst of Global warming as we teach the future leaders to accept sustainable sources of energy, we also exercise the same. Multiple areas of the campus have been solar powered. We have installed 470 solar panels in the campus. The street lights are completely powered with solar panels. The mess and hostel has a set of panels used especially for solar heaters, cookers, hot water. All our utensils are sterilized with the hot water generated from the solar panels.
Blessed with a campus of 125 acres, we try and make the most of it by practicing organic farming and have various cultivable lands for fruits, seasonal crops and grains, herbs, spices and medicinal plants. The fields are well maintained with on campus farmers who utilize equipment and machines of the latest technology to cultivate a good and healthy produce. The manure that we use also comes from the in-house compost that we prepare. We also utilize this asset to give the students a hands-on and practical learning about various agriculture practices and equipment. We also have a space on the campus called ‘Nakshatra Vatika’. Astrologers believe that each constellation of the zodiac is associated with a tree. Those trees are of medicinal, social, aesthetic or economic value.
We have two beautiful ponds on the campus – One natural while the other has been hedged artificially which adds to the serenity of the campus. These ponds attract a wide range of migratory birds every winter. We grab this opportunity to take our students out in the field and teach them ‘Birding’. It helps them to learn about the birds, their migration cycle and develop a respect towards all living creatures. These ponds are a classic examples of self sustained water resources for water harvesting. They are internally connected and all the water received by rain gets collected in the ponds and provide water throughout the year. They have been designed such that once full they transfer water back to the soil to increase the level of water table.
Flora and Fauna
Our school is extremely rich in its diversity in terms of the flora and fauna. The campus is home to 132 species of birds, 15 species of Mammals and 16 types of reptiles, few of them endangered. There are over 4500 different kinds of trees with a dream to have one tree of every type. We are fortunate to have extremely passionate people who continuously work towards maintaining and growing the flora and fauna of the campus and contribute to a global cause. The trees on the campus have name plates with their scientific names and a small description about them. This helps the students to learn on the go.
To add to the agricultural fields, we have 3 bio-gas plants on the campus. All the waste generated in the mess goes to these plants and gets recycled. A pipeline parallel to the LPG runs which fuels the everyday activities. The compost is used as a manure for agricultural fields. Since the students are surrounded by a sustainable infrastructure, they get moulded to adapt to such practices when they become the front runners. They learn better by seeing and doing than reading.
Sewage Treatment Plant (STP)
Our STP Sewage treatment helps us in removing contaminants from wastewater, primarily from household sewage generated from the mess. We further utilize this water for the fields. Sewage settlement tanks are placed right outside the school building which can be used for children to understand similar concepts practically. The sewage treatment plant haven been painted with infographics which helps the students self-learn without any assistance.
